Location

Edgewood is a hamlet located in the town of Islip, Suffolk County, New York. It is situated on the south shore of Long Island, approximately 45 miles east of New York City. Edgewood is bordered by the towns of Brentwood, Baywood, and Central Islip.

The hamlet is easily accessible by car via the Southern State Parkway and the Long Island Expressway. The nearest airport is Long Island MacArthur Airport, which is located in Ronkonkoma, approximately 5 miles from Edgewood.

History

Edgewood was originally settled by the Secatogue tribe of Native Americans. In the 17th century, Dutch and English settlers arrived in the area and established farms and homesteads. The hamlet was named Edgewood in the late 19th century by a group of wealthy New Yorkers who built summer homes in the area.

During World War II, Edgewood was home to the Edgewood Arsenal, a chemical and biological weapons research facility. The facility was closed in the 1960s and the land was turned over to the town of Islip.

Attractions

Edgewood is home to several parks and nature preserves, including the Connetquot River State Park Preserve and the Bayard Cutting Arboretum State Park. These parks offer hiking trails, fishing, and birdwatching opportunities.

The hamlet is also home to the Bethpage Ballpark, which is the home field of the Long Island Ducks minor league baseball team. The ballpark hosts concerts and other events throughout the year.
