Where is Cana? A Guide to the Biblical Town

Where is Cana? A Guide to the Biblical Town

Location of Cana

Cana is a town located in the northern region of Israel, in the Lower Galilee. It is situated about 9 miles northeast of Nazareth and 15 miles west of the Sea of Galilee. Today, the town is known as Kafr Kanna and is home to a population of around 20,000 people.

Visitors to Cana can explore the town’s historic sites, including the Wedding Church, which is believed to be the site of Jesus’ first miracle of turning water into wine at a wedding feast.

Significance of Cana

Cana is significant for its role in the Bible and Christian history. As mentioned earlier, it is believed to be the site of Jesus’ first miracle, which is recorded in the Gospel of John. This event is seen as a sign of Jesus’ divine power and the beginning of his public ministry.

In addition, Cana is also mentioned in the Gospels of Matthew and Mark as the hometown of Nathanael, one of Jesus’ disciples. Some scholars also believe that Cana may have been the birthplace of the apostle Thomas.

Today, Cana is a popular destination for Christian pilgrims who come to visit the Wedding Church and other religious sites in the area.

Cana in the Bible

As mentioned earlier, Cana is mentioned in several books of the Bible. In addition to the story of Jesus’ miracle at the wedding feast, Cana is also mentioned in the following passages:

  • John 4:46 – Jesus heals the son of a royal official in Capernaum, which is located near Cana.
  • John 21:2 – Nathanael, who is from Cana, is one of the disciples who witnesses Jesus’ resurrection.
  • Acts 9:35 – Peter heals a paralyzed man in the nearby town of Lydda, which leads many people in the region to turn to the Lord.

These passages demonstrate the importance of Cana in the Bible and its role in the early Christian church.
