Location

Brawley is a city located in the southern part of California, in the Imperial Valley. It is situated about 130 miles east of San Diego and 20 miles north of the Mexican border. Brawley is part of Imperial County and has a population of approximately 25,000 people.

History

Brawley was founded in 1902 as a result of the Southern Pacific Railroad’s expansion into the Imperial Valley. The city was named after J.H. Braly, a landowner who sold the land to the railroad company. Brawley quickly became an agricultural hub, with crops such as cotton, alfalfa, and vegetables being grown in the area.

During World War II, Brawley was home to a Japanese internment camp, where over 2,000 Japanese Americans were held. The camp was closed in 1945, and the former site is now home to the Brawley Cattle Call Rodeo, one of the city’s biggest annual events.

Attractions

Brawley is known for its agricultural heritage and has several attractions related to farming and ranching. The Cattle Call Rodeo, held every November, is a popular event that features bull riding, barrel racing, and other rodeo events. The Cattle Call Parade, which takes place the day before the rodeo, is also a must-see event.

The Salton Sea, a large saltwater lake located about 30 miles north of Brawley, is another popular attraction. The lake is a popular spot for fishing, boating, and birdwatching. The Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge, located on the lake’s southern shore, is home to over 400 species of birds.

Brawley also has several parks and recreational areas, including the Lions Center for Youth and Adults, which has a swimming pool, basketball courts, and other amenities. The Barbara Worth Country Club, located just outside of Brawley, is a popular spot for golfers.
